Lest We Disappear: Notes from our planet’s endangered species

Why should we protect our planet’s life and its diversity? And, moreover, why should we be mindful towards the environment? What is happening to our planet? Answers to these questions may be met with a variety of reactions, and, depending on the respondent’s geography, with different levels of disagreement. By some accounts, a large fraction of Earth’s species is now facing extinction, with the potential of losing up to half of the current numbers by the end of this century. A continuation of the Poles of the Planet: Old and New trilogy, Lest We Disappear therefore engages yet another difficult, with hope not insurmountable, pole: preserving life on our planet, including humanity itself. It recognizes that loss of biodiversity is more severe problem than are related environmental issues often propagated by the media. Addressing it adequately requires a reshaping of our views and behavior towards life and the space in which it happens. This book encourages such changes by bringing its readers closer to a shared understanding of what is happening, why, and what might be done about it. Told in verse, largely from the perspective of an endangered animal across continents, the messages lead to an appreciation of natural balance, diversity, healthy environment, mutual dependence, and the impact of human action.
